We spend ‘2 mins with …’ Ella Leck, one of Totum’s consultants dedicated to recruiting technology professionals. Here she shares some fun facts about herself, how she got into recruitment and advice to candidates.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An astronaut. More specifically, the first person to touch the sun.
What did you study at University?
Mind to Matter by Dawson Church changed my life, I recommend it to anyone that will listen. The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse is also an excellent read for all ages. As for anyone with a creative interest, Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act: A Way of Being.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra?
‘Thoughts become things and life is what you make it.’
Favourite holiday destination?
Most recently Portugal, but I still have 25+ countries on my bucket list – so I’m sure this answer will be ever-changing!
What is your background?
I previously spent six years as a Personal Trainer, before moving into tech recruitment in 2021.
How did you get into recruitment? And more specifically, technology recruitment?
I was looking for a career change post-Covid and somehow stumbled into conversations with a rec to rec (the people that recruit recruiters). One thing led to another, and I started my first recruitment job. I’ve always had an interest in technology, its evolution, and how it can be used to improve our experience as humans, so I’m grateful to contribute to this through my role in recruitment.
What would be your top 3 candidate tips for someone looking to build a career in technology?
- Always be learning, never stop asking questions and saying yes to opportunities.
- Don’t underestimate the importance of soft skills (e.g. communication, personable skills)
- Build a strong network. Attend any events or conferences that you can, make consistent communication a priority and keep your Linkedin updated!
Any plans for 2024?
As we see so many new and exciting roles within technology, especially in the past few years, I’m looking forward to working closely with a broad network of innovative IT professionals in such a pivotal time of technology transformation. As for personal growth, I’m aiming for lots of self-improvement this year and hopefully a few holidays!
