Who are today’s business service leaders and how are they shaping the next evolution of the professional services sector? In this report, we are delighted to share our analysis of Totum’s business services leadership placements in 2022/23. 

Key research highlights:

  • Totum continues to achieve gender parity in the numbers of men and women placed into business services leadership roles.
  • From 2020 to 2023, Totum placed an average of 47% men to 53% women.
  • Of our most senior ‘Chief’ roles in 2022/23 which include COO, CEO, CFO, CMO and CPO roles – we placed 56% women to 44% men.
  • In Finance too, for the first time, women achieved complete parity with men, taking 50% of the leadership appointments in 2022/23.
  • In 2022/23, 27% of our candidates placed into leadership roles had backgrounds that were predominately from outside of the legal sector.
  • Our expanding cross-sector capabilities are also reflected in Totum’s breadth of clients: 28% of our overall placements are now in sectors including accountancy, management consultancy, real estate and the patent industry.
  • In 2023, COO roles made up 61% of our placements at Chief level.
  • Of all our leadership projects in 2022/23, 65% were for Director roles.
  • In terms of specific functions, there has been a notable increase in general management roles to 29%, an increase from 11% in 2022.
  • 97% – the total percentage of retained projects Totum has filled since 2020.
