Totum are delighted to be working with one of the City’s finest commercial law firms in the search for a Business Manager. Reporting into the Finance Director but with heavy dotted lines in the practice group’s senior Partners, the purpose of the role is to provide strategic and day-to-day operational support to the Group Heads. This is a newly created position and will form part of a suite of Business Managers which have recently been introduced to the firm. As such it does have some flexibility in which direction the role will develop.

The main duties and responsibilities of the Business Manager will include helping drive the groups’ strategic planning processes, including advising on, drafting and monitoring the groups’ business plans and drafting business plans for individual partners (PPPs); managing the financial performance of the groups including preparation of the groups’ annual budgets and monitoring the groups’ utilisation, time recording, WIP, debts and profitability ; reviewing trends and highlighting key information from monthly P&L reports to the partners; monitoring utilisation and work allocation of associates within the groups and summarising trends to partners; and facilitating performance management process and commenting on salary and bonus proposals to ensure salaries are aligned across all the groups. It also involves supporting candidates for internal promotions by assisting in testing the rationale of business cases and assisting with financial information; managing resourcing for the groups by identifying gaps and working with HR on going out to market and recruiting relevant individuals; supporting the Trainee Review Representative (TRR) on trainee supervisor allocations, mid- and end-of-seat feedback and facilitating NQ hiring discussions; and working alongside HR to manage client secondments within the groups. The role will also take ownership of managing internal communications including people related news, new joiner announcements, bi-monthly department updates and working with the Secretarial Coordinators to improve the processes and efficiencies within the groups.

Applicants should have excellent communication skills and be used to working alongside senior stakeholders in the formulation of strategies and achievable business plans. Excellent financial and commercial acumen should be demonstrated as should the ability to mentor and coach individuals up to and including Partner level in how to best manage their business units and develop their careers. Strong project management skills particularly around change implementation also needs to be a strong part of applicants’ skills sets. Any applicants should have a track record of working in either a la firm or at least a large corporate professional services environment. A professional accounting qualification is highly desirable.
