The Director of Business Development will be responsible for creating and delivering the strategy for the firm's approach to business development and marketing including the development and management of the firm's brand, the provision of an appropriate marketing infrastructure and continued improvement of the firm's business development, client relationship management and sector strategy.

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and managing a team of 30, the successful individual will be a key member of the firm's Senior Leadership Team and will also work closely with the Executive Committee.

A more detailed role specification is available but specific responsibilities, working through a small number of key reports, will include:

  • working with Sector Leaders, Divisional Managing Partners to ensure alignment of the Business Development, Marketing and Communication Strategy with the firm's vision, strategy and commercial objectives
  • providing inspirational leadership to the team, developing skills and capabilities within the group that will ensure excellence in service to clients (internal and external)
  • creating an "account management culture" involving Partners, lawyers and professional staff to manage client relationships more effectively and achieve measurable results
  • supporting an engagement culture in which client relationship teams actively provide the firm’s chosen clients with value-add content and thought leadership
  • overseeing the firm's client feedback programme, ensuring conversations take place, insights are well communicated and follow-up actions are implemented
  • developing a "lifecycle approach" to pitches through a comprehensive review of opportunities, compelling pricing propositions, development of materials, training of lawyers and debriefing with clients
  • Providing strategic guidance to the evolution of the AG brand and the firm's international internal and external communications strategies, ensuring maximum market profile

Suitable candidates will have all or many of the following:

  • the ability to lead a function through significant change, including people and process
  • vision and the ability to articulate a compelling vision of the future shape of the business and its client relationships, of the firm’s approach to clients, the management of relationships and how the firm services them
  • experience of working in a multi-office, multi-cultural, non-hierarchical environment. Professional services sector (audit, consulting, law) exposure is desirable as is personal sales experience
  • a track record in creating and implementing successful programmes and initiatives within a budgetary and time-critical framework
  • international experience, either by working outside the UK or in an international context within the UK. Additional language skills (German or French) would be an advantage.
  • the ability to operate under pressure to resolve issues in a controlled and calm fashion
