Bates Wells Braithwaite stands out as a firm combining a top 100 legal practice with services in impact measurement, outcomes-based planning and strategy, and financial services regulatory compliance. The firm works with a wide range of clients, large and small, across a variety of sectors – from established businesses, charities and social enterprises to innovative start-ups and high-profile individuals.

The firm was founded on a very distinct set of values, which are as strong as ever today and make them unique. BWB is proud to have been the first UK law firm to certify as a B Corp. Certification which ratifies their commitment to doing business in the best way possible for their people, their community and the environment.

BWB is looking to recruit a Chief Operating Officer.  This role is already well established at the firm and is one which has contributed significantly over the last 10 years as the firm has grown.  It reports to the firm’s Managing Partner and has a seat on the Management Board.

The key responsibilities of the role include the following:

  • Strategy – assisting the Managing Partner and the Board to define and deliver the firm’s strategy
  • Finance – reporting to the Board on a wide range of performance measures, driving improvements where required, as well as fulfilling all regulatory duties eg solicitors’ accounts rules
  • Innovation – taking responsibility for driving innovation from both an internal and external focus, seeking out new ways of delivering the firms service in a rapidly changing market
  • Leadership – having a strategic oversight of the experienced team of business services heads and their functions (including finance, marketing/business development, HR, risk & compliance,  IT and facilities) ensuring they operate effectively as a team
  • Reputation – representing the Firm as a member of external organisations which have an impact on the firms external profile

This is a critical role for the firm and one which the partnership has total commitment to.  It requires a candidate who has well rounded commercial experience and a strong financial acumen.  This will most likely have been gained in a professional services partnership turning over in the region of £20m to £50m per annum.  In addition the candidate must be accustomed to leading a team of experienced business services heads, providing direction where required to ensure the firm is receiving the best support possible.  Critically, candidates must understand and genuinely embrace the ethos of the firm and relish the prospect of working in a highly successful, profitable business but one which “does business in the best way possible for its people, its community and the environment”.

Totum have exclusively been retained to run this project on behalf of Bates Wells Braithwaite.  If you are interested in the opportunity please send your CV, your remuneration details and a cover letter to explain your suitability for this role to either [email protected] or [email protected].
