This well regarded mid-tier law firm has created a new role for a legal finance professional with strong commercial acumen. Sat with and reporting into the lead partners of some selected teams in the business, the primary function of the Team Finance Manager is to assist with all finance related processes and activities including implementation of both team specific and firm-wide change initiatives.  The Team Finance Manager will also work alongside Partners to ensure that communication is effective and that sustainable and satisfactory gross contribution is achieved. 

The responsibilities of the role fall into two sections; Finance & Administration and Communication. In the first category responsibilities include assisting Partners with the annual budget preparation process ensuring that it is aligned to the team’s strategy and realistically achievable; presenting the team’s annual budget to the Head of Divisions and Finance Director for final sign off; on a monthly basis review progress of achievement of team GC target and report quarterly to the Head of Division. Working with the Head of Division and team members to identify actions required to meet/exceed the target; ensuring that the team are implementing the firm’s financial procedures (to include estimating, accurate time recording, regular billing, credit control and management of the team’s total lock up); ensuring that project plans are produced before significant transactions are taken on; ensuring that post matter reviews are undertaken; that data regarding the cost of production and profitability of repeat tasks is collected and analysed; and that lessons learned are applied.

Under the Communication category key tasks include; attending the finance section of the quarterly review meetings with the Head of Divisions and report on areas outlined in the quarterly review guidelines; ensuring that Partners are updated on any aspects of financial management prior to the Head of Division/Partner quarterly meeting; leading the finance section in team meetings; assisting   Partners in cascading financial information received from the management board as appropriate; communicating key successes, initiatives and ideas from the team to the Head of Division and, if applicable, firm-wide; and regularly evaluating the effectiveness of financial management within the team and mentor and coach individuals where improvement is needed.

This is a senior role and requires an individual with exceptional communication skills and demonstrable experience of working with senior stakeholders including Partners in a law firm environment. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to quickly cut through large extracts of data to highlight the areas of concern or importance are also vital in this role. An accounting qualification would be advantageous but not critical.
