Totum are delighted to be working on a retained basis with a thriving West End law firm in its search for its first Chief Finance and Operations Officer. The firm is immersed in the media, entertainment and creative industries and is rated in the upper tiers in several relevant Legal 500 categories. Reporting into the Managing Partner and Finance Partner, the CFOO will have overall responsibility for the finance, HR, IT and Facilities departments and work closely with the Head of BD & Marketing on a variety of projects and initiatives. With guidance and input from the Partner management committee, the CFOO will help to initiate and implement the firm’s ongoing strategy and business plans for the finance, HR, IT and Facilities departments. The role will also act as the finance business partner to all the firm’s partners and fee earning teams, offering commercial advice and guidance on any finance-related issues.

With responsibility for nine members of staff, the CFOO’s duties are split between the Finance and wider Operations team management and also strategic and business partnering responsibilities. These include managing the finance, IT, HR and Facilities teams via three heads of departments, providing input and oversight of career development, training, staffing levels and any other managerial requirements for those team members; taking on the COFA role and taking ownership of all finance-related compliance requirements from the SRA, HMRC and any other relevant regulatory bodies; providing financial strategy, analysis and planning at a firm-wide and practice group level including annual and longer term business planning; reviewing the current management reporting and management information being provided to the businesses and making enhancements or improvements where required; reviewing current technology used and where it is thought required, putting together business plans for upgrades and/or implementations; assisting the Managing and Finance Partners in the budgeting process; regularly reviewing WIP and debtor days, making recommendations for improving both and implementing new policies when agreements on them have been made; and with the exception of BD & Marketing, doing a complete review of current business service teams’ processes and making improvements where necessary. The role requires a commercially-minded individual who is able to give advice and opinion on the full range of financial issues a modern law firm faces including both internal cost savings as well as external profitability and pricing issues. The successful candidate will also act as a financial mentor and coach to Partners and also fee earners who have been highlighted as future Partners, instilling best practice in them at an early point of how to run their businesses as successfully and profitably as possible.

Applicants for this role should be qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) and have a track record of working in a corporate law firm or similar professional services environment. It doesn’t necessarily need to be someone who has operated at this level previously and could suit someone working in a larger firm looking to take on their first number one finance role. Obvious characteristics that must be demonstrable are strong, technical accounting and commercial acumen, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and several years of working in managerial roles. Versatility, resilience and the ability to inspire and lead teams and individuals during periods of change is a must. This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious accountant to join a friendly, impressive specialist law firm which is looking to continue growing and developing in a senior management role.
