Totum Partners are delighted to be working with the law firm Mills & Reeve to find a Financial Controller to join its finance team of 35 people. Reporting directly into the firm’s CFO and with responsibility for the leadership, motivation and regulatory compliance of the team, this is a fantastic opportunity for an individual to take their next step towards a Director level role. Working with the CFO, the Financial Controller role is both an operational and strategic level position. As well as team management the successful candidate will be looked on to provide business insights to improve the overall performance of the business, helping to deliver the firm’s strategy.

Alongside the CFO the Financial Controller will set the Finance team’s vision and objectives in line with the firm’s overall strategy and then lead and motivate the team to deliver against these objectives, cultivating a strong collegiate culture. They will provide mentoring and coaching to team members and help to recruit and develop finance team leaders of the future. Management responsibility include direct reports from the financial and management reporting team, Working Capital Manager, Operations Manager and Management Accountant. Working alongside each of these individuals, the Financial Controller will aim to provide best in class for all of these functions. Working with the CFO, the successful candidate will have responsibility for the statutory and regulatory compliance of the team including UK GAAP, HMRC, SRA and VAT regulations.

The Financial Controller will provide business insights and recommendations into where efficiency improvements can be made at a firm and in the finance team, following them up with practical measures when approval is given. This will include systems and controls to ensure greater regulatory compliance as well as process improvements. Working with the Commercial Managers the individual in the role will identify opportunities to improve the fee earning team’s performance.

Applicants should be degree educated and qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with demonstrable experience in developing and implementing rigorous financial controls as well as the monitoring of the preparation of budgets, reports, forecasts and consolidated profit & loss reports. The role requires a strong, inclusive leader who has managed similar sized teams (25+) previously and can display examples of where they have employed mentoring, coaching and negotiating skills to good effect. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, the ability to present financial data clearly and precisely to senior management and make recommendations including potential risks as well as benefits is a pre-requisite. The role will involve regular travel to the other UK offices particularly in the Midlands and Norfolk.
