One of West London’s premier law firms is currently looking for a Financial Controller to join its head office. Reporting into the Finance Director and being part of an accounts team of 15 staff, this is role sits with the senior business service management team. The purpose of the role is to manage the provision of a complete finance service to fee earners in the practice and to support the Finance Director in directing and controlling the financial management of the practice as well as to ensure compliance with the solicitors’ accounts rules and budgetary limits.

Responsibilities for the role will include working with the Finance Director and Group Heads to build annual budgets, 3 year strategy in line with business plans and Finance timetable; the production of monthly management accounts packs and statistics including performance management analysis; working with the Finance Director and Accounts Manager to ensure that systems and procedures comply with the Solicitors Accounts Rules; and working with the Finance Director to produce rolling re-forecasts to ensure an accurate assessment of business performance. The role-holder will assist in the monitoring and control of expenditure within the parameters of the approved budget; liaise with the Finance Director and the Partnership’s accountants to ensure a smooth conclusion of the annual audit in order that they may report compliance under the solicitors’ accounts rules and to assist in the compilation of the Partnership’s annual accounts for distribution to the Partners and prepare year-end Partnership accounts.

There will be some assistance with debt and cash collection by supervising cash flow weekly, assisting the Credit Controller to produce regular reports to monitor progress against cash collection targets and monitoring overhead expenditure against budget (eg. Travel accommodation, entertaining, training, disbursements etc) including authorisation of such expenditure. Technical aspects of the role include taking responsibility for a variety of balance sheet reconciliations; supervising VAT returns ensuring compliance with all VAT regulations and requirements and provide advice and guidance as required; preparing and reconciling monthly payroll through liaison with HR and in conjunction with outsourced payroll provider; ensuring timely and accurate payment of staff, supervision of HMRC year end returns, P11Ds, P60s, etc as prepared by the payroll provider. The Financial Controller will also be expected to process/authorise incoming and outgoing CHAPS and BACS payments daily using online banking systems; liaise with auditors, HMRC, companies, Government agencies and banks; and assisting the Finance Director with projects.

Applicants should be qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or international equivalent) with experience of working in a professional service environment. Demonstrable experience of leading and managing finance teams including both transactional and reporting members should be seen on CV’s. A can do attitude and ability to get involved in the detail as well as more strategic-level work is imperative in this role so experience of working in rounded roles for SME businesses should also be shown on resumes.
