For over ten years the legal sector has been in a perpetual state of transition, with law firms adapting and adjusting to the changing landscape caused by a combination of enhanced clients’ expectations, new entrants to the market, disruptive technology and a seismic shift in what the new generation of employees expect from their employers. Some law firms have embraced these changes in at least some part, but few have done so with such willingness, vigour and innovation as Shakespeare Martineau, whom Totum is currently working with in its search for a new Chief Finance Officer.
Working closely with an ambitious, entrepreneurial CEO and forming part of both the Executive and Main Board, this CFO vacancy is an exciting opportunity to join a legal service provider which is constantly striving to pursue the best new working practices to enable it to realise its future ambitions.
The firm has already gone some distance in differentiating itself from its competition. The corporate governance of the business allows it to be versatile and able to respond quickly to changes in the sector. The senior management team has a mixture of backgrounds, some having spent a good proportion of their career in law firms and being subject matter experts in how to run them, whilst others newer to the sector, bringing fresh ideas about how to approach the constant challenges it faces. Across the firm there is a passion to grow in a sustainable, sensible but bold way and a business plan to achieve this through a mixture of M&A, external investment and organic growth programs. Having recently undergone an internal restructure, this is an exciting time to join one of the UK’s truly progressive law firms.
The CFO role requires an adaptable, multifaceted qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or international equivalent) who has operated at an executive board level. Previous experience of working in a fast-growing professional services business is a must, as is prior exposure to working with external investors. The ability to manage a large, diverse team needs to be demonstrable. This firm values highly its entrepreneurial environment and needs a CFO ready to be open-minded to proposals made, able to add commercial support when required and challenge and stress-test ideas to make sure they are achievable. The consistent drive for innovation will come from all members of the C-Suite and candidates should be able to show the ability to be able to mitigate the risk of adapting working practices and adding new business streams in order to push the business forward in a brave, pioneering and prudent way.
